GILBERT, Ariz. (AP) - Most Gilbert town councilors are declining the travel allowance that compensates them for using their cars on business for the Arizona town.
Councilors say that will help the town's budget shortfall.
The travel allowances provide councilors $150 for travel up to 300 miles a month or $300 for up to 600 miles per month.
Mayor John Lewis - who usually travels more than council members on official business - is the only one accepting the allowance.
Three council members aren't receiving travel allowances but are reimbursed for the miles they report.
Three others aren't taking any travel money whatsoever.
1 of them, Linda Abbott, says it's important for councilors to show they're making sacrifices as city employees are.
