Small hauls in penultimate round of the York and District Winter Angling League

THE penultimate round of the York and District Winter Angling League produced the worst form of the series, with only 28 of the 73-strong field having anything to offer the scales.

Those not drawn on the Bridgefield at Bishopthorpe had to endure a dire contest, with only a handful breaking the pound barrier.

On the favoured end section it was a different story as the odd bream and skimmer was willing to feed in the 20ft-plus water.

Tony Layfield (Sensas Wibsey) led from peg 87 with a duo of slabs taken on feeder and worm for 4lb 12oz.

Two pegs upstream, Don Murray (Tang Hall Match Group) had a single bream weighing 3lb 4oz.

Ray Marklew continued the theme for York Tackle from peg 81, where he bagged himself a brace of skimmers for 3lb 3oz.

Steve Snaith (Bishopthorpe and Acaster) topped off the Bridgefield domination from the peg below the winner. A single bream of 2lb 12oz accounted for his net, but a pair of lost fish undoubtedly cost him the match.

In such a low scoring contest, it was no surprise the leading anglers also provided the bulk of their team’s totals.

Sensas Wibsey led on the day with a tally of 5lb 2oz ahead of Tang Hall Match Group, who netted 3lb 12oz, and York Tackle, on 3lb 4oz.

With the finale in two weeks time, Sensas Wibsey hold a slender advantage with 45 points ahead of Barlby Village Stores on 43 and York Tackle on 42.

In a match dominated by roach, the bottom of the Linton length again proved to have the edge on Saturday with fish to 6oz showing to maggot.

Paul Burton, of Angler’s World, had the best of it at peg 289 where maggot fished at 12 metres brought him 6lb 15oz to top a close frame in the Riverside Financial Services match.

Four pegs downstream, Maver Barnsley’s John Dunhill opted for a small feeder fished a third across to take same stamp roach, but he finished a couple of fish behind with 6lb 9oz on the scorecard.

Early morning snow affected the turnout at Langwith Lakes on Sunday. The carp were not too impressed either and they fell away quickly behind winner Dave Cheetham.

Drawn at peg 12 on Anya’s, Cheetham alternated maggot and pellet across to the island margins to pick off carp to 3lb and, at the whistle, he had a solid 40lb 4oz in the net.

On peg 12, next to the winner, Bill Pearson mounted a spirited challenge using maggot to the island, but he dropped off the pace and had to settle for second, with 33lb 9oz carp to 3lb again responsible.

The Hunter’s Lodge bream finally showed in the Leeds Winter League on Sunday and three in the first hour gave Ian Fieldhouse a good start from which he never looked back.

Drawn at 219, Fieldhouse used worm and maggot on the feeder at half-width and added a further four at intervals to win convincingly with 28lb 6oz.

Bream also showed on the Willow Garth, where Ian Bates and Dave Miles used the feeder at pegs 190 and 181 respectively. They took a brace apiece to end the day inseparable with 10lb 4oz each.

There were no big carp nets at Raker Lakes this week, where Jim Gladstone (Anglers Corner) led with only 11lb 4oz. Drawn on peg 14, he netted small skimmers at eight metres on maggot fished over micro pellets.

Mally Walsh (Leeds) took second from peg 18, where double caster offered at 16 metres brought him a brace of carp and a tench for 10lb 14oz.
